Album Of The Week: Ave Maria - En Plein Air by Tarja Turunen

Ever since her untimely departure from the symphonic metal band Nightwish, I really haven't been all that enthusiastic about Tarja's solo material. Until now. Not long ago I discovered that earlier this fall she released an album called Ave Maria - En Plein Air which is an album filled with variations of "Ave Maria" (a traditional prayer to the Virgin Mary). This is her first classical album. Unlike her other solo albums where you really don't get to hear Tarja's full potential as a singer, Ave Maria - En Plein Air shows where Tarja's strength lies. Her voice is really suited for the classical genre. I have no doubt this album will be in my top 10 best of 2015 when I post it at the end of the year. This is the album I have been dying to hear from Tarja given her immense talents as a singer.

Music I am currently digging

I really digging the sounds of the Glasgow electropop band Twissted. Their song "Gentleman Jack" is my personal fave of mine.

Absolutely LOVE the new Ayria EP Feed Her to the Wolves. In my opinion, the songs are far more compelling than her previous album Plastic Makes Perfect which had its moments of brilliance here and there but overall just didn't impress me as much her previous albums.

The new Psy'Aviah EP Never Look Back/Words is quite good although the songs aren't up there like the ones on The Xenogamous Endeavour (one of my favorite albums of 2014). Still worth checking out.

Today I picked up the new Florence and The Machine album at the library today. I really liked what I heard.

New music: Twissted

Today after work I came across a great new electropop act from Glasgow called Twissted (you can also find them here on Twitter. I found out that they had followed my Twitter page so I clicked on their link to their sound cloud page to listen to their music. I definitely dug what I heard. They are some really killer electropop music. "Gentleman Jack" is my personal favorite track by the duo but all the tracks are just downright excellent. Great new find as 2015 is slowly winding down. Go check 'em out!

Album Of The Week: Faithless 2.0 by Faithless

For this week's Album of The Week pic, I chose the new compilation Faithless 2.0 by Faithless. I have been a fan of their music since the mid-late '90s. Before I got into goth/industrial music, I was listening to a lot of house and techno music which included Daft Punk, The Crystal Method, Leftfield, The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, and Faithless. Faithless was a huge influence on me. Their first two albums Reverance and Sunday 8pm are absolute faves in the electronica genre for me and that has held up really well over the years. I loved their mix of trip hop, house, and trance music. The group always made music that could make me want to dance to and still does to this very day.

Faithless 2.0 is a celebration of the band's twenty years of making music with two discs containing remixes and the original hits. EDM today really doesn't interest me but I have to admit the remixes on disc 1 are really good. The remixes of  "We Come 1 2.0" by Armin Van Buuren and "Salva Mea 2.0" by Above and Beyond are my absolute faves. So glad there isn't a remix of "Mass Destruction" (my least favorite Faithless song ever). The second disc is the original tracks of the group's hits a few songs I only heard for the first time.

I like some modern EDM but no one has yet or  has the ability to make such memorable and uncompromising, original music that Faithless did for twenty years.

Album Of The Week: Beware of Light by Helalyn Flowers

For this week's Album of The Week pick, I decided to go with Beware of Light by Helalyn Lights, this really isn't a full length album, it is more like an EP (i.e extended play). Beware of Light EP features a collaboration with Chris Pohl of Blutengel and includes remixes of the song as well as another new song "Karmeggedon" The new songs and the remixes are excellent. In the past Helalyn Flowers' music has been inconsistent, sometimes good and sometimes not so good but after White Me in/Black Me out, I think the duo has finally figured out how their music should sound like.

Heard a lot of super crappy albums this year but I won't mention the albums or the artists. At the moment Chvrches, SPC ECO, and Ashbury Heights are at the top of my list of best albums of 2015. Their albums are simply way too good to ignore.

Album Of The Week: Dekadenz by Frozen Plasm

Dekadenz by the synthpop act Frozen Plasma is easily my favorite EBM/Futurepop/Synthpop album of 2015. As much as I enjoyed the new albums by Neuroticfish and Angels and Agony, the new Frozen Plasma album is really outstanding. As catchy as the songs are on the album, there definitely is a distinct melancholy to a lot of the music. If you haven't heard Dekadenz  yet, you should know now. Easily one of the best releases of 2015 in my book.
