Absolute Grrrls Manifesto

So after work today, I discovered via email that Alfa Matrix is putting out an awesome 4 CD compilation called Absolute Grrrls Manifesto [Chapter 1]. Here is the track list. Of course I had to pre-order my own copy. That was an obvious given. This compilation also inspired me to put together my own collection of my favorite female fronted industrial/synthpop bands via youtube. It doesn't have as many artists featured on the playlist but I think people will get the point ;). Enjoy!

Albums I am currently listening to

Got a few kickass CDS in the last couple of weeks. I have been enjoying them immensely.

Moonlight Cove: Orphans of the Storm

I finally got my copy of Moonlight Cove's first album from poponaut. I am so addicted to the album as well as the Swedish synthpop band in general. After listening to a few tracks from the album on youtube,I finally found a website that was selling Orphans of the Storm and ordered it. I was not disappointed. I can honestly say I can't pick a favorite between the band's two albums. Both are a joy to listen to.

Tegan and Sara: Heartthrob

I'm not going to pretend and say that I am a diehard fan of Tegan and Sara. Like 'em? You betcha. I have heard a couple of albums by them and liked what I heard but being a big fan of electronic-based music, their previous material never really caught on with me. That is until now with their latest album Heartthrob. I had heard that the duo went all electro-pop on their new album so I took a listen to a few tracks online and liked it enough that I bought a copy. I am really digging Heartthrob immensely. Very catchy and fun to listen. Definitely will end up on my best of list at the end of the year.

Nightwish: End of An Era

Lately I have been listenin to a lot of Nightwish especially Nightwish with Tarja. A couple of weeks ago I picked up End of An Era, at the time I didn't realize it was a live album. I'm glad that I bought it though. The live album brings back fond memories of the 2004 concert I went to.

Blutengel: Monument

I finally got my copy of Monument yesterday. I had shelled out $68 for the box set which includes a 100 page book (of course in German), a tribute to Blutengel's career and three cds featuring bonus tracks and piano versions of a few Blutengel classics. I absolutely love the album (sans "Save Your Soul", my least favorite track on the album).

A few tracks from the new Blutengel album Monument

Tonight I decided to see if any tracks off the new Blutengel album Monument somehow found their way online onto youtube. Lo and behold my suspicions proved correct. I found a few tracks and thought I would share them with my readers. I should note that I BOUGHT my copy of Monument and I strongly recommend in showing the band's support by buying the item legally (and not to torrent the album from Pirate Bay and their ilk). That said, enjoy the few tracks I have found.

My least favorite albums

Earlier today on my personal FB page, I had posted a status update about Delerium's Chimera and how it is one of my least favorite album from the ambient/pop group. It immediately gave me tonight's blog least favorite albums. I always talk about my favorite albums (past and present) so why not my least favorite albums? I should note that I do not hate the following albums, just disappointed in the body of work by the bands. I also am going to mention that the bands that I will be mentioning are bands I adore so what I say about the following albums do not reflect on the bands as a whole. I would take tonight's post with a grain of salt. Enough with my rambling, here is my top 10 least favorite albums.

10. Republica - Speed Ballads

I absolutely loved and still love Republica's first album. When I was really into the band back in the '90s, I bought their second album Speed Ballads without hesitation. Wish I didn't spend around $20 on an album filled with all filler tracks. The songs lacked the same infectiousness in the melodies and energy in the beats. I recently came across the band's Facebook page and as it turns out, the band is making new music. I'm excited although slightly concerned that the new tunes will be like the material on Speed Ballads but I have to have faith in the band to create some excellent tuneage.

09. Angelzoom - Nothing is Infinite

I absolutely love Angelzoom's first album. I thought it was a really solid pop album but when Nothing is Infinite came out 3 years ago, I felt totally let down. The music was just not up there with the band's self-titled album. I found the melodies to be very flat and lifeless. I hope when they put out a new album, the material will be much stronger than on Nothing is Infinite.

08. Dido - Safe Trip Home

Most boring album ever. At least one of the most boring albums I have ever subjected myself to.

07. Bat for Lashes - The Haunted Man

I love Bat for Lashes first two albums. They are pretty damn good if not flawless. So it came tome as a shock when I was left unimpressed and bored with the latest Bat for Lashes album The Haunted Man.

06. Curve - Come Clean

While not terrible, Come Clean was not exactly the most exciting album I have heard from my favorite British rock band. I just felt like I was listening to the same damn song over and over again. IMHO Gift was a far better album.

05. Nightwish - Century Child

This is easily my least favorite Nightwish album with Tarja. I just find the material mediocre in comparison to most of their albums. It's not bad but I just don't think there is anything to write home about this album.

04. Delerium - Chimera

The choice in singers on this album is what makes listening to it so unpleasant. I found some of the singers quite shrill for my liking. I didn't care for some of the lyrics too (i.e too sentimental IMHO). Thankfully I do like their new album a lot.

03. Hanzel und Gretyl - Ausgeflippt

I love HuG but their first album is just horrible. There I said it. Go check out 2012 Zwanzig Zwolf or Uber Alles or Scheissmessiah.

02. The Bangles - Sweethearts of the Sun

As big fan of The Bangles, I was really disappointed with their latest effort (sans Michael Steele who had retired from the music business). Not having Michael in the band really showed in the lyrics and music.

01. Faithless - No Roots

There really was a time when I just loved Faithless. I lived and breathed for this band. Then they put out this turkey called No Roots. It did not have a signature epic dance track like they had on their previous albums. I simply didn't like their grittier sound the UK group created on this album and that is what led me to stop buying their music. No Roots totally alienated this longtime fan.

Waves Under Water

So tonight I was perusing youtube for music from Elane when I came across by chance this great band called Waves Under Water. They are from Stockholm, Sweden. It really did not take me very long to fall in love with their music. The only site I could find any of their music was on ebay. Being the music junkie that I am, I ended up buying their most recent album All Of Your Light. I definitely recommend checking them out. They are way too awesome in my book.

You can hear more of their music at their Last FM page. Check them out. Their music is simply divine.

Faderhead - FH4 [album preview]

I can't believe I am going to be saying this but I actually like what I have heard on this preview clip of Faderhead's new album. Pretty damn scary considering my personal feelings on Faderhead is (and they ain't positive feelings either). Not sure if I would buy the album. I may but there are other 2013 releases I am more excited about than new Faderhead.

My music collection

It has been awhile since I last posted a list of my [current]. Maybe a year or two ago. I thought I would share with everyone my current collection, not including those I have ordered (or pre-ordered)online. It was a pretty lengthy process for me to write down all of my cds and mp3 into one list. A tedious process for sure. I may not have a huge collection compared to some people's music collection but I stand by what I own. For me, it is quality over quanity in terms of music ownership. Berlin Babylon

A couple of days ago I came across a new electro pop outfit called Berlin Babylon on FB. I got a chance to hear their song "Night and Day" and I really dug what I had heard. Of course I would dig it since I am a huge fan of electropop/synthpop so this would be right up my alley ;). According to the group's FB page, they have a EP coming out soon. I definitely am looking forward to hearing their EP. In the meantime, enjoy their song "Night and Day". Really like it a lot.

Songs I can't stop listening to

I think I am just going to scrap my whole mix of the week/month blog series. I think it is just easier to post a bunch of my favorite songs that I am digging at the moment. Damn you Mixpod for no longer to be able to afford to keep up all the servers running! J/K :P. So here is my current favorite songs that I have been listening to incessantly.

Moonlight Cove: Smile Of Low

This song is so damn catchy. I finally got around to ordering the band's first album Orphans of the Storm. I can't wait to get my copy. I love this band too much.

Animal Alpha: Bundy

This is the song that was played at the end credits of the film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. I absolutely loved the song. Thank heavens I found it on youtube with no problems. Too bad the band is no longer together. I totally dig this song and the other songs I have heard (so far) from them.

Luna Mortis: Forevermore

I was listening to the band's album The Absence today (on my metal kick). I almost forgot how much I dig this band and their album. Too bad they are no longer together and I never got to see them perform live. Oh well. Still love this track.

Blutengel: You Walk Away

I think this goes without explaination ;).

Djerv: Madman

Agnete used to sing in the band Animal Alpha. I spent a bit of time listening to Djerv's music today while at work. Really dig their song. I especially dug this particular tune.

Omega Lithium: Pjesma

I was listening to some Omega Lithium today and almost forgot how much I love this song.

My favorite albums that I didn't expect to like

Tonight I decided to take a break from my usual posting on our little corner of the music scene and share with readers my favorite albums that I didn't expect to like.

Scala and Kolacny: Scala and Kolacny

Early last year I came across Scala and Kolcany via youtube with their cover of The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love". I was really drawn to the distinctive interpretations of various popular songs in modern music ranging from The Cure to Rammstein (believe it or not).

I first of Exitmusic in an article on City Pages' website. It featured a video clip of one of their songs from Passage. I was totally hooked. Their album Passage is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard, reminds me a lot of Sigur Ros and Bat for Lashes.

Delta Rae: Carry the Fire

Delta Rae is a band I totally did not expect to like but I did. I had seen a music video by the band on VH1 one morning and was totally intrigued by the band's mix of gospel, folk, country, rock, and blues. And the harmonies is really fantastic. I rarely hear bands harmonize as well as Delta Rae. Their debut album proved to be totally addicting.

Chely Wright: Lifted Off the Ground

Now this I really didn't expect to like since I am not a big country music fan. After reading her book Like Me and watching Wish Me Away documentary, I figured I had to check out her album Lifted Off the Ground which was released in 2010 when Chely came out of the closet. Much to my surprise, I actually found myself enjoying her album. I think I like the album so much is because it is such an sparse, intimate, personal album without the bombastic theatrics that comes with a lot of country albums. I can't believe I am saying this but I plan on buying Chely's next album when it comes out. She made this non-country music fan a fan.

Ellie Goulding: Halcyon

This is one of my favorite pop albums of 2012. I wish this album got as much airtime as P!nk's Truth About Love (which I like but the music is getting overplayed too death), if not even more so. I wasn't really a fan of Ellie's when her first album came out but when I heard "Anything Could Happen", I decided to give her music a chance.

Dolly Parton: These Were the Days
A co-worker had lent me his copy of this Dolly Parton cd for the afternoon like a year or two ago. I was surprised by how much I liked her interpretations of the classic songs on this album. I will say this I do prefer her original material but still These Were the Days is a fun album. It's a nice departure from what I usually listen to at the office and at work.

Garbage at Mills City Nights on 4/5

As I was heading home this afternoon from seeing Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (which I fucking loved), I saw on Garbage's FB page that they had announced their remaining North American dates for this spring. Guess what I saw on their list of tour dates? Minneapolis on 4/5 at Mill City Nights. The show hasn't been posted on AXS'website just yet. According to Garbage, tickets will on sale on February 15 at 10am. I am so taking my morning break to call AXS and buy my tix at work. So in the meantime, enjoy some Garbage videos :).

New videos

This week has been a very good week for music videos. Depeche Mode, Nadina, How to Destroy Angels, Delerium and Project Pitchfork have all released new music videos. Enjoy!
