What I am currently listening to
This week has definitely been a great week for new music. NPR made Our Native Daughters' album Songs of Our Native Daughters available for streaming before it comes out on February 22. I bought the new albums by Piroshka and Ladytron yesterday (along with Valerie June's second album The Order of Time). I have been listening a lot to the new albums by Our Native Daughters, Ladytron, and Piroshka albums in such a short little time. I have been very much looking forward to these albums for quite some time. In the NPR link I posted just above The Mavericks album, the writer delves into the project led by Rhiannon Giddens. The timing of the release of this album during Black History Month is not lost on me. I think the timing is perfect for this project. I also love the historical context of the songs and everything involved in the project. There needs to be more collaborations like Our Native Daughters and less Twitter wars between female artists tearing each other down. Seriously, that shit is old. Don't be surprised if my readers sees this album on my annual best of list. I love the collaborations between the four women and how well they sound together.
As for the Piroshka and Ladytron albums, they are fantastic. So well worth the wait. Piroshka is former Lush guitarist/vocalist Miki Berenyi's new band featuring former members of Elastica, Modern English, and Moose. I personally don't htink Piroshka sounds like any of the band members' former bands but that's just my opinion. It is a fun, energetic album. Ladytron's self-titled album is more lush and more moodier. I like that they tone down the electroclash sound the band is so well known for. Not a big fan of the song "Paper Highways" but overall great album.
This week I also bought tickets for the upcoming Valerie June and Brandi Carlile concerts at Cedar Cultural Center and the MN State fair. I am very much excited to see both women live. I am really digging Valerie June the more I listen to her music. Her second album The Order of Time is my favorite VJ album.
Thanks to NPR and All Songs Considered, I checked out some new music by Bob Mould, Hauschka, and MILCK. Of the three , MILCK was my favorite. Hauschka's music was rather dull especially to listen to at work. Bob Mould's new album Sunshine Rock was a lot livelier but not my cup of tea. MILCK on the other hand is a different story. Just love the up and coming singer/songwriter's EP This Is Not The End. The ballads "Quiet" (which became an anthem for the Women's March in 2017) and "Black Sheep". I can so relate to the lyrics in the two songs.
If you haven't heard of I Ya Toyah, she is touring with Zwaremachine this spring. I checked out her album Code Blue and it is really good, go check it out. Too bad I will be out of town when she and Zwaremachine play at The Red Sea in April (on the 20th).
