Album of the Week: Empty by Mondtraume

While at work today, I realized that the debut album Empty by the Spanish synthpop band Mondtraume was officially released to the public. Of course I had to stream it while at work via Bandcamp. To say I love this album would be a gross understatement. I knew Empty was going to be great when I first heard a few songs online but once I had heard the album in its entirety, to say it is great doesn't do the album justice. Empty is more than just great. It is a beautiful, well-crafted synthpop album that has left this listener speechless and quite moved by the haunting lyrics and vocals of Damasius Venys. Of course I can not forget Damsius's bandmate Pikotto VonMond who provides the music and programming behind this excellent album. This is the first time I am going to admit this but this album gave me goosebumps. I have heard and enjoyed many a synthpop albums over the years but very few has dug deep into my soul as Empty has on me. Every song on the album is a true gem but the one song that truly stood out for me was "New Life", a tribute to Pikotto's newborn child. That song made me pause for a moment at work. Such a loving tribute to a child from a new father. The lyrics actually brought a tear to my eye. Also loved the fact that the song features samples of Pikotto's child. The remixes on the two disc version of Empty is excellent. I particularly enjoyed the remixes by Psy'Aviah, Psideralica, and Pox Sono. As a massive music junkie, I immediately ordered a copy of Empty from Alfa Matrix to show my support for the artist and record label. I can easily say that Empty will be at the top of my annual end of the year list as one of the best releases of 2014. The album is a beautiful work of art that needs to be heard (and bought legally).
